French couple trekking across Southern states say people have have been kind, contrary to TV
MOBILE, Ala. -- A French couple trekking from Miami through Mobile on their way to Brownsville, Texas, said television's depiction of America as a violent nation is unfounded.
William Guimaraes, left, and Laetitia Casareto, of France, are walking across the Southern states to get to know the American people. Their final destination is the tip of south America.
Laetitia Casareto, 23, and William Guimaraes, 26, said today as they took a break on the Causeway that so far they have met only "nice" people.
Their final destination is Ushuaia, Argentina, on the southernmost tip of South America.
Casareto said the purpose of walking across the South is to meet people and determine for themselves if Americans are civilized, or if they are gun-wielding fanatics as depicted by television.
"Before we come into America, we think people are closed and afraid of everything and all people have guns and everything," she said. "On television we see a lot of people with guns. It is exactly the contrary. People are very friendly and if we need anything they are there for you. For us, it's wonderful."
Casareto said she that so far the only bad experience they have had was on a road that cut across the Everglades.
She said, "It was the alligators. I was really afraid of maybe 20 alligators. We walk on road and we follow a river and we saw a lot of alligators. Yes, I cried a lot."
She said they already have taken a similar walk in Asia and are experienced backpackers.
On this adventure, the couple said they flew from Paris to Miami, where they started their walk Sept. 27. Casareto said they have a 90-day visa and plan to be in Brownsville, about 1,400 miles from Miami, before it expires.
Don Gill, 64, of Fairhope, met the couple Monday morning as they were walking across the Causeway.
He said, "I think it's real great, and brave too, that they are doing this because of the way it is today. There is too much violence. People are doing crazy things, but they are a nice-looking couple. I just commend them for it."
Guimaraes is capturing their adventure on video and said people can follow their trek by going to their Web site www. turnofthhttp://www. turnoftheworld.comeworld.com. He said he updates the Web site about every three months.
ET UN PETIT REPORTAGE TV :

That's great that they want to come here to the US and South America to see for themselves whether or not the depictions they see are true or not. I'm glad they've had such pleasant experiences thus far.
I think, however, it is sad that people so openly believe what they see and hear on TV and in the newspapers, etc. More people need to think for themselves. That's why there is so much hatred and intolerance in the world...people fall prey to stereotypes and images they see, rather than formulating their own opinions based on experience.
